Training with a difference...an insight into Inclusion Needs You

April 04, 2023

Active Impact’s free Inclusion Needs You courses have provided an insight into working with disabled children and young people.  Led by Philip Douch and Jennie Goodrum, the combination of non-disabled and disabled trainers brings lived experience into the room.

The day is set up to make you feel welcome and comfortable from the moment you have booked your place.  You will be sent all the information you need to find the venue, what you will need to bring, the facilities available and what the course will cover.

When you arrive you will be welcomed by a host and the trainers who can answer any questions you have.  Everything is designed to put you in the right frame of mind to learn and enjoy the day. Co-trainer, Philip Douch says;

“It doesn’t really matter if you’ve got no previous experience at all and you’re a little bit scared about the whole thing or whether you’ve done a bit or quite a lot previously involving disabled young people.  Our intention is that people go away feeling that they’ve got more tools and they feel more confident about what they’re doing more effectively in the future.”

How much you contribute is entirely up to you; if you just want to sit and listen, no one is going to pressure you to speak.  But the sessions also an opportunity for practitioners to share best practice and swap experiences.  Everyone goes away with a deeper pool of knowledge afterwards.  Jennie Goodrum, who shares the training with Philip adds;

“By the end of the course people will have a far better understanding of how they might include disabled children and young people with a wide range of requirements.  It’ll give them a bit of a toolkit to think around what they offer and how they can adapt it to meet a wide range of requirements.”

Inclusion Needs You is a safe place to learn with interactivity which is both encouraging and non-threatening; you’re degree of involvement is your choice.  There is no jargon or ‘psychobabble.’  Philip says;

“There will be plenty of laughs as we explore some important issues with a lightness of touch.  It’s serious stuff without a hint of being worthy.”

Word of mouth is the best endorsement so the final word goes to this participant;

“I don’t think I’ve laughed so much at a training course.  Thank you for another brilliant session. Looking forward to the next.”
